T Southworth

1st tier candidate:

Thomas Southworth

b 1771 Cunningham, Hampshire Co., MA - d 1810 Onondaga, NY

A joiner in 1796 and 1797 deeds from Dalton, Berkshire Co., MA.

Thomas married Lucy Lathrop in Dalton in 1800. The had their first child Augustus in MA in 1801 and moved to Salisbury, NY by 1802. Two deeds for 1802 Salisbury were found, but no trade was given. They moved to Hollis, NY soon after and had their four remaining children there: John, Thomas and Freeman. Freeman was born in 1809 and Thomas died in August of the next year in Onondaga, NY. No further information was found regarding his craft/trade.

The Southworth family was an early well-established family based in Plymouth Colony. Records there and in the surrounding counties were searched as well as VT and NY based on early census records. Another Thomas was found in Hancock, MA and then moving to Sherborn and Dryden, NY at the same general time, but he was a tanner and currier. No other T Southworth's with a woodworking trade were found.

A note on the wedge. This wedge is rather close in profile to those of Caleb and Luther Fisher of Salem, NY in the 1790's.

Thomas Southworth, 1796 deed.... a joiner in Dalton, MA.
